About Us

P.S. 124 is located on Fourth Avenue in South Park Slope, Brooklyn, very near the F, G, and R subway lines.  With about 320 students in grades pre-K through 5th, we  sometimes think of our small school as an extended family.  This culturally diverse community includes students who speak Spanish, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese,  and Polish, as well as English.  The faculty and staff is almost as diverse, with teachers from many backgrounds and places far from Brooklyn, and with an unusually high ratio of male teachers.

Our Kindergarten and first grades offer true Dual-Language English/Spanish classrooms. In second grade we offer “Spanish as a World Language” instruction. For students in our kindergarten, first, second, fourth and fifth grades, we provide Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classrooms with higher teacher-student ratios so that special needs students can work alongside their peers.

We’re proud of our school’s lively balance of academics, technology, and the arts.  Browse through our blog pages and discover for yourself the connections our students are making in their reading, writing, media, and technology.  Students here are using VoiceThread, iMovie, Google Apps for Education (GAFE), and more. They do research on their laptops, in their classroom libraries, and in our school library which is well stocked with books of all genres, Mac and Windows computers, and audio-equipped SmartBoard.

P.S. 124 has a science lab where children apply and test their knowledge in hands-on projects and experiments, an art studio where kids can plunge into sculpting clay, paint, and papier mâché, and a music program that weaves movement, singing, and instrumental work to build music literacy.  Our physical education program focuses on positive ways to promote health and fitness through good nutrition and physical activity.

We really believe in providing a well-rounded education that includes intellectual, physical and social growth from early childhood all the way through the upper elementary years. Our former students often return from great middle schools and high schools as well as college and young adult life to tell us they’re glad they went to P.S. 124.
