Girls Read for Girls read-athon

November 8, 2013

Brooklyn Public LibraryWe’re spreading the word from Councilmember Brad Lander’s office about the upcoming Girls Read for Girls read-athon inspired by Malala, a 16 year-old Pakistani activist who has overcome tremendous odds to continue her fight for girls’ education and human rights. The read-athon will raise funds to support Women for Afghan Women, an organization based in Queens that is dedicated to serving and protecting the rights of disenfranchised Afghan women and girls in Afghanistan and New York (WAW).  Boys are also welcome and it is a wonderful opportunity for children to combine reading and charitable fundraising in one fun afternooon.

  • Girls (and boys!) from grade 1 to 8 are welcome at the second annual event to be held on Saturday, November 16, 2013, 2:00pm-4:30pm at the Park Slope Library.
  • The event starts with a short program that begins at 2:00 and then the children find a quiet place in the library to read.
  • Participants print out a pledge sheet to ask friends and family for either a per page amount or a set contribution.
  • More information and pledge sheets available at:  http://girlsreadforgirls.tumblr.com/
