Hello from The Media Spot

September 22, 2006

Hey PS124 Staff,

TheMediaSpot.orgI wanted to formally introduce The Media Spot on this blog. TMS (http://themediaspot.org) is the media education program and resource website I started with my partner and old friend, Andy Hieb in 2000. We are excited to announce that we will be working on integrating technology in the upper grades at PS124 for the next 2 years.

Our general approach is to use video production and Internet-based projects to promote “media literacy”, or the expansion of the idea of literacy to include critical analysis of media (video, TV & movies, Internet content), and an understanding of how media messages are constructed. (See our website for more info on media literacy, and our process).

Andy will be managing and advising us in the use of our web resources, including this blog and the class blogs we will be creating in the upper grades. He’ll help me create support resources for you, and establish best practices for using our various blogs and web sites. Andy will be doing this primarily from Seattle, but will be visiting sporadically throughout our time here.

I’ll continue to be “on the ground” here at school, helping the upper grade teachers create projects that utilize the technology resources at PS124 to support the standard curriculum while teaching students both how to use technology for learning, and to gain a more critical understanding of media messages that surround them in their environment.

I’m also here for everyone who has questions about the blogs, or is looking for advice on how to use technology in the classroom.

The 3rd-5th grade blogs are going up next week. We’ll announce their launch here, and will be publishing student writing and multimedia projects shortly — stay tuned!

See you around,

Rhys

    Hello PS 124 folks,

I just want to say that I’m excited about working with you! I’ll be posting on your blogs periodically, I’ll be in touch with some of you via email, and I look forward to meeting you the next time I’m in Brooklyn.
