Resources to teach our students and their families about internet safety

December 19, 2010

Privacy Fades in the Facebook Era“  is a recent New York Times article that details how easily a person’s private information can be accessed online, even when they have taken steps to protect their identity from strangers.
  • Bullying Academy is a good website for 4th graders on up to learn and think about bullying online.
  • Hector’s World is a site for younger children designed to teach about safety on the internet via games and animations.
  • Netsmartz is a site for parents and educators that includes powerful video lessons about privacy and on-line safety.
  • IKeepSafe.org has videos and other resources for teaching and learning about internet safety and privacy.
  • Common Sense Media is a website that offers lots of resources for educators to teach online safety in grades K-12. It’s probably the best one, but you have to register (create a password, etc.) to log-in access their lesson plans, and videos.
  • Internet Smarts is another collection of resources, created by Cablevision.
  • YouTube for Schools is an initiative by the famous video hosting site that lets schools access free educational YouTube videos while limiting access to other YouTube content.

The Aquarium

In camp we went to the aquarium. It was raining and we still went. It was fun I saw a baby shark, a big shark and turtles. And I saw eel and a big fish.

It was amazing and fun and then we ate LUNCH.  I ate a sandwich and cheese. It was more fun and then we went to see the  jellyfish. It was like they were in space but they were not in space.

I wanted to see something cool and then I saw a big squid! We got to touch it. We got to touch starfish and crab. We saw the waterfall and marlin. Then we went home.

The Storm

I went to my grandma’s house. It was my brother’s birthday. I ate chicken and rice.

While that happened a storm came.  My grandma’s stuff was flying around.  I hope none of the people got hurt.

When it stopped we looked outside. Then we all went home.   I ate food then I went to bed.

The Weird Day

When I was in Poland I was on a farm. A cow was like on a rope and it untied so it was running everywhere. I called Grandpa so he went to see.

I was so scared so I went to hide. Because if they see you they run towards you. So I hid in the shed.

I peeked to see and he saw me. I ran as fast as I could to the house. When I got to the house I did not feel my legs so I fell on the floor.

Five minutes passed so I went outside. My grandma said are you okay? I said okay. So she hugged me.

I went upstairs to lay down and watch Hanna Montana. Next on Disney Channel was Sponge Bob I did not like it so I went downstairs to eat.

I ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. After I ate my sandwich I went on the computer to play The Sims 2. My cousin told me turn off the computer a… hurricane is coming.

Turn off everything. We played a game while the hurricane stopped. The hurricane was a small one right cousin. My cousin said yes.

2010 top 10: #1 Hugo Cabret Documentary, and #2 Kindergarten Showcase Videos!

June 18, 2010

#1 The Hugo Cabret Unit Documentary (directed and edited by Ms. Abodeely)

Take a look at Ms. Abodeely’s third graders discussing the book, The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.  They use traditional literacy skills such as prediction and summarizing as well media literacy skills to “read” the many images in this exciting text, and use the novel as a touchstone for their fiction writing as well.  The culmination is to produce iMovies based on their writing with text and “readable” images just like Hugo Cabret!  This is the 3rd year Ms. Abodeely has developed a unit around this text, and it is clear from the exciting and engaging discussions in this video that it will not be the last.

#2 Kindergarten Showcase Videos by Ms. Toledo!

Kindergarten Writing Video from March 2010 — You have to give it up for Ms. Toledo for putting out the call for more coverage of the Kindergartners on the website this year.  She was gushing about how she saw other schools presenting student experiences online, and, accepting no less for her students, got Mr. Rhys to help her use iSight and iMovie to start sharing the learning experiences that kids at 124 are having on the first floor with the world through the Internet.

April 2010: Kindergartners at PS 124 use activities on the Pre-K and Kindergarten Class Page on the Internet to build basic technology skills outlined in the National Educational Technology Standards, like using the mouse, opening and closing programs, and basic navigation of websites.  Have a look!

2010 top 10: #3 The Invisible Man Comic Video, and #4 Our Visit With Judy Barrett Video

June 17, 2010

#3 The Invisible Man Comic Video & Making-of Documentary

In this adaptation of a classic novel into a comic book, then into a video, Mr. Tandarich’s 5th grade students demonstrated an understanding of how to use multiple media to represent details in story and bring their vision to life.  It’s clear from watching the documentary that they understood how to create tone through a combination of editing, images and expressive reading.  The result: a 21st century version of a classic!

#4 Our Visit With Judi Barrett – author of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs…the video!!…

Ms. Barrett has written over 20 books including, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs! She read to our students, showed pictures and answered questions.  Mrs. Lane and her production team of 5th graders documented the visit with a Flip Camera, and added reflective narration and a few bells and whistles in iMovie.  The result is an authentic student archival of a meaningful moment in their PS 124 experience.

This WNET Channel 13 and Chase Multimedia in the Classroom Award Winning PSA was researched, scripted and storyboarded by Mr. Marsano’s kids, then shot and edited collaboratively with Mr. M and The Media Spot.  It was screened for several hundred teachers and students at the Celebration of Teaching and Learning in Manhattan.  It’s another great model by Mr. Marsano of a classroom production integrated in the writing curriculum with a critical focus on a specific community issue. And it was recognized by the Eveready Battery Company.
